Carriacou is the largest of the Grenadine islands and along with its sister isle Petite Martinique makes up the tri-island state of Grenada. Measuring about 7 miles in length and 2 miles wide, Carriacou boasts some of the most scenic beaches in the Caribbean, surrounding volcanic hills.
The population is only around 5,000 and the beaches are not crowded. Nightlife is limited to local music at beach bars and rum shops although there are occasional festivals and performances given by regional West Indian music artists.
The Carriacou Annual Regatta, the first weekend in August, The Annual Parang Festival, the weekend before Christmas,
and the Carriacou Carnival, preceding Ash Wednesday, are popular events. Carriacou has a rich cultural heritage as expressed in the Big Drum Nation Dance
There are lots of hiking trails and historic ruins to explore. Carriacou is also famous for its boat building and several vessels can be found in various stages of construction. Carriacou has excellent snorkeling and diving sites. Visits to smaller outlying islands can be easily arranged with a water taxi. There are various gift shops throughout the island displaying local crafts.
